Alinghi Weather conditions on Lake Geneva were light today for the start of the Geneva-Rolle-Geneva 35 nautical mile race.

After a trip that lasted 3 days aboard an Antonov cargo plane, Telefonica Negro, the Spanish VOR team’s black boat, is now sound and safe in her base in Alicante. The Farr-designed Volvo Ocean Race boat arrived at the airport early in the morning on Thursday and after another odyssey that lasted almost 10 hours she was unwrapped in the team base in the afternoon.

[Source: Golden Gate Yacht Club] The Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) said it was very pleased with today’s hearing before the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court and looked forward to an expedited decision that would enable the next America’s Cup match to be held as soon as possible.

[Source: Alinghi] The Société Nautique de Genève (SNG), the America’s Cup Defender, today put its case to the five judges sitting in the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court. The Swiss yacht club successfully consolidated its appeal from Justice Cahn’s 12 May 2008 order with the previously expedited 14 April 2008 appeal. Now it continues to wish for a speedy resolution and to conclude the litigation initiated by the Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) almost a year ago.

[Source: AUDI Medcup] Platoon powered by Team Germany, steered by triple Olympic gold medallist and double America’s Cup Winner Jochen Schuemann (GER) emerged unscathed from a dramatic and exciting coastal race to take the best of the points available, winning both sections of the 39 miles passage to Cassis and back, on the third day of racing at the City of Marseille Trophy, the second regatta of the Audi MedCup Circuit.

Here are the first images from the arrival of the brand new “Telefonica Negro” VOR boat from New Zealand.

The details are still unclear but it appears that two collisions took place at the first weather mark of today’s coastal race, forcing three boats, Matador, Caixa Galicia and Mutua Madrileña, to retire and head back to port.

The jury ruled in favor of BMW Oracle and gave them 3 points in Wednesday’s 2nd race (Race 5 of the event) instead of the 10 they had initially received. The American team, together with Mutua Madrileña, AUDI Q8 and Cristabella were found to have crossed the starting line too early but Russell Coutts and James Spithill immediately raised the protest flag.

If the opening day of the regatta offered a modest introduction to ‘Mistral-lite’ conditions, 15-19 knots, today’s two windward-leeward contests met with conditions much closer to the upper racing limit for the Audi MedCup Fleet of TP52’s.

[Source: AUDI Medcup] The MedCup in France carries memories the international crew of the Argentine TP52 Matador will be happy to bury today. In Hyeres last year they broke their mast during the final regatta of the season and had to consign to the deep their hopes of a top three finish overall. But today the international crew mastered the Mistral and used the awkward swell to best effect and emerged from the three excellent races leading the regattas by just one point.

[Source: BMW Oracle] BMW ORACLE Racing said today that it will compete only at the Marseille stop of this year’s Audi MedCup Circuit as the team’s number one priority is to now get ready for the next America’s Cup.

After a year of inactivity in Valencia, Shosholoza’s RSA-83 is back on the water, this time in Naples, Italy. The South African America’s Cup boat took part in Velalonga, one of the most popular sailing events held in the southern Italian city. More than a racing event, the Velalonga is a popular nautical festival and the brightly colored boat, once the pinnacle of sailing technology, had to share the Gulf of Naples together with another 200 boats.

The latter is the winner of the long distance DHL Trophy.

Alinghi Alinghi relaunched the X40 this morning at 0730 in Lugano having worked late to rig the replacement mast and get the boat ready to race.

It was interesting but it wasn’t what we were expecting or what we would have liked to listen or see. This pretty much sums up Friday night’s presentation by Tom Ehman, head of external affairs, and Manolo Ruiz de Elvira, senior designer, at the premises of Valencia’s yacht club. The two men from America’s Cup Challenger of Record BMW Oracle talked to an audience of around 40 people on the America’s Cup for about an hour and a half, touching almost all aspects of the world’s oldest sports competition, ranging from its history to the most recent legal issues and the current state of affairs of their own team.

[Source: Quebramar GP42 Cup] After an eventful start in Santa Margherita, Italy, the GP42 fleet will now move to Saint-Tropez, France for the second event of the Quebramar GP42 Cup, the Giraglia Rolex Cup, held from June 8th to 10th.

Alinghi Lugano, CH (30 May 2008, 14:40): During race 1 in Lugano, a squall hit the race course and the Alinghi X40 capsized.

[Source: RC44] Six hours to complete an entire Round Robin: the organisers of the Austria Cup have done a great job after yesterday’s postponement. Today’s races were superb, with 8-15 knots of wind and a great sunshine. Team Ceeref wins the event, ahead of Team Aqua and BMW ORACLE Racing.

That’s the peril of holding a race in a lake.

[Source: BMW Oracle] The carbon fiber mast for BMW ORACLE Racing’s new America’s Cup multihull is now under construction at Hall Spars in Bristol, Rhode Island, the team confirmed today.

[Source: iShares Cup] This brand new Extreme 40 team is backed by the Sultanate of Oman as part of a larger project to promote the country as a world-class sailing destination. The crew will begin the series made up of international pro sailors, but with an increasing presence of Omani nationals as the campaign progresses.

[Source: RC44] They may be the best sailors in the world; they still have a lot to discover in the world of sailing. With its exceptional scenery, snow capped mountains and lovely thermal breeze, Lake Traunsee certainly delivers on this respect, to the delight of all the sailors involved in the RC 44 Austria Cup.

Given the impasse the 33rd America’s Cup has found itself, everybody, except BMW Oracle and Alinghi, has to improvise and find alternatives to the lack of activity in order to keep the team alive and, most importantly, find sponsors that will guarantee its survival.
